Joie Chen celebrates her birthday on the 28th of August and was born in 1961 in the United States of America. She currently resides with her husband, Michael, and her son Evan, in Bethesda, Maryland. She will be turning 57 this August!
She attended the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Journalism.
She also represents the Asian American Journalists Association and serves on the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
Professional Life
Chen started her career in journalism by working at WCIV-TV in Charlseston, South Carolina as a reporter and producer and later moved on to work at Atlanta’s WXIA-TV in Atlanta as a reporter and anchor for six years (from 1985 to 1991). Then she was hired as a correspondent at USA Today On TV.
In 1991, Chen started working for CNN at CNN International and the channel’s domestic operations. She provided coverage of U.S. military operations in Somalia and Bosnia and was the anchor for the coverage of Columbine High School shootings, the trial of Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh.
For her brilliant works on and off the field, Chen received an Emmy award, especially for her anchoring work on the coverage of bombing at Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Atlanta Games. She also won the CableACE Awards for the Best Newscaster, along with her co-anchor, Leon Harris, at The World Today.
After departing from CNN in 2001, Chen joined CBC in 2002 and started working as a White House and Capitol Hill correspondent in Washington D.C. She was also present to cover the September 11 attacks and the War in Afghanistan. Her anchoring work in everyday of three-week Beltway sniper attacks in 2002 helped her win another Emmy award.
Chen became the Executive Vice President at Branded News Worldwide after leaving journalism in 2008.
She was hired by Al Jazeera America in the summer of 2013 as the sole anchor of their flagship news program, America Tonight. On the show, she has had the chance to cover a wide range of interesting stories in the United States.

Chen hasn’t quite utilized her broad reach to increase her social media followers. Despite being a two time Emmy-winner , she has only 2500 followers on Twitter.
She joined Twitter on the January of 2009 and has tweeted around 5900 times until now.
