Personal Life
Victoria Antoinette Derbyshire was born on the 2nd of October, 1968 in Ramsbottom, Lancashire, England, U.K. She went to school to the independent Bury Grammar School for Girls and at the University of Liverpool, where she studied English language and literature.
She went for a postgraduate diploma course in radio and TV journalism at Preston Polytechnic, currently known as the University of Central Lancashire. It was known that she had a traumatic childhood after she claimed that as a child, she, along with her mother, younger brother, and sister, had been abused by her father, Anthony Derbyshire.
Derbyshire married an editor from Wise Buddah Productions, Mark Sandell with whom she had started an affair while working at BBC Radio 5 Live. Sandell had already been married then with Derbyshire’s fellow presenter, Fi Glover. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and announced the fact on her Twitter account in August 2015. She has undergone many treatments since then while continuing to work as a news presenter whenever she can.
Professional Life
Derbyshire started her career in journalism at a local radio as a reporter but then had her big break when she moved on to join BBC Radio 5 Live in 1998 to work as a co-host of BBC’s breakfast show, which won the Gold Sony Awards in 1998 and 2002, with Julian Worricker.
After Worricker’s leave from the show, Nicky Campbell became her partner. Derbyshire became the main host of the program after returning from a maternity leave in August 2004.
Derbyshire has been able to work for numerous other television programs and done a lot of news coverage. She hosted Newsnight and made an appearance on This Week on BBC News Channel and Watchdog. She was entrusted to cover some of the biggest historical events live including the 9/11, Paris Concorde crash, World Cups and Olympic Games and several general elections.
She became to first to broadcast a show live from Zimbabwe in 2009. Her program was the first to broadcast an abortion live from clinic in 2012 and also an animal testing laboratory. She debuted on Have I Got News for You in the October of 2011. On 7 April, her current affairs program began airing on BBC Two and BBC News Channel.
She was awarded the Nick Clarke Award in 2009 and the Gold award for Best News & Current Affairs Program at the 2011 Sony Awards. She triumphed at the number one Sony Academy’s Speech Broadcaster of the Year beating top-notch professional Journalists in 2012. In 2014, she won the Speech Broadcaster of the Year award for the second time.
In the October of 2015 and 2016, Derbyshire also became the Pink News Broadcaster of the Year. She went on to win the BAFTA Television Award in 2017.
